According to Hamas, the only source the news media ever cite, approximately 43,000 people have died in Gaza since Israel attacked in mid October of last year. The population of Gaza is over 2.2 million. Hamas does not distinguish between the deaths of civilians or terrorist fighters, though nearly all reports agree that close to 20,000 Hamas terrorists have been killed. We don’t know how many of the 23,00 other deaths were by causes unrelated to the war.

In other words, the death toll to innocent civilians, while deeply regrettable and appalling, is all due to Hamas starting a war and holding its people hostage as human shields. Approximately one percent of the civilian population has died, a complete tragedy, but not genocide or war crimes. To the contrary, the relatively low casualty rate evidences that Israel is carefully targeting sites and is giving adequate warning. On top of this, Israel just permitted all Gazan children to receive polito inoculations. Aid has been allowed in, and I can’t think of any other warring nation that allows this, and now, due to US pressure, more aid will enter Gaza.
