CHRISTIAN NATIONALISM IS A LIE
There’s nothing more UnAmerican than the idea of “Christian Nationalism.” If you doubt me, read the attached Virginia Stature for Religious Freedom. (At the end of this post.) It was written by Thomas Jefferson in 1777, and is often held to be the seed for James Madison’s insistence on the First Amendment. Jefferson specifically demanded that all religions of the world be treated equally, meaning their adherents could practice, free from government involvement of any sort, and no religion could be exalted over any other for any purpose. (If only Jefferson had spoken out so boldly against racism and slavery! Despite that horrible flaw, he was a great figure in history, because of such examples of tolerance made law.)
America was founded on the notion of separation of church and state, and no religion is more “American” than others. Under our Constitution, religion is a purely private matter, utterly unrelated to a secular government.
Check out Article I, Clause 3 of the Constitution: “…no religious test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public trust under the United States.”
How about the First Amendment, which reads: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;”
Do those words sound like the words of people who wanted America to have a religious basis as a “Christian nation?” Of course not! They say just the opposite, that we have no official religion, and we’re not based on any one religion…
