I agree that appropriation is a serious problem, where Black music languished because racism prevented it from reaching white audiences. We know many people, Elvis especially, appropriated and modified and gave no credit and it didn't help the Black artists who were the real creators.

However, the Stone and Richard are not the worst offenders and are in fact a lot more responsible than most. When Mick and Keith first got hold of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Bucka White and the other great, they were kids who were captivated by great music. Brian Jones wanted them to be "the best Blues band in London." When they were successful, they always gave credit to the greats who influenced them. They also made sure that artists like Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and a few Lees, got to play with them and other British invasion bands, record in London, nd make more money than in all the years before. Compare to LedZep, who were sued several times and had to give money and credit to Black artis they copied.

Th Stones are not the poster boys for appropriation of Black music with attribution or appreciation. Just the opposite.

Having said all that, I appreciate the thoughtfulness and detail in this post. I just don't believe they fit the

picture you are painting.
