Memo to all my fellow independent authors, who resent the dismissive attitude towards us from the traditional publishers, agents & reviewers:
Mickey Spillane sold more books than any Nobel or Pulitzer winner, and he’s still selling well. Critics never cared for him, and publishers chafed under his dictates to not edit his books; they knew they couldn’t say no to America’s top-selling author, with tens of millions of faithful fans. (It never dawned on these stuffed-shirts that perhaps Mickey knew more about fiction writing than they did.)
A critic once asked Mickey spillane how he felt about having seven of the top ten best sellers, whereas so many “prominent” authors of the day had none. Mickey retorted, “Shut up or I’ll write three more!”
