SORRY, DESANTIS, YOU CAN’T DENATURALIZE AND DEPORT ILHAN OMAR (But she can be beaten in a primary.)

Florida Governor once again displays complete ignorance of the US Constitution and our immigration laws, and overlooks the real way to get her out of office.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, called for Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) to be expelled from Congress, then denaturalized, and deported, based on an inflammatory speech she gave to constituents. Omar stated that she was going to work within the system to defend her native Somalia against the US. In other words, she plans to use her power as a Congressional Representative, including access to classified information, to aid a foreign power against the nation she his sworn to protect and defend. Omar is taking a “Somalia First” approach, which would be fine were she a legislator in Somalia, but utterly unacceptable as a member of the US Congress. She’s got to go, but not in an unconstitutional manner.

Despicable as her words may be, there is no legal basis to denaturalize or deport Ms. Omar. As the late, great Supreme Court Justice William O.Douglass wrote, an American citizen, by birth or naturalization, may choose to be a model citizen or a total ingrate, but unless they renounce their citizenship, they keep it forever. There is no legal basis for revocation of citizenship or removal form the US…
