Sorry, but Donald Trump isn’t on the list. Historians generally agree a President needs to be out of office 25 years to effectively evaluate them. Trump has a lock on the Worst Ever title, once he reaches that road mark.

One of my most popular posts was when I rated the Presidents of my lifetime, from Harry Truman through Bill Clinton; while I discussed George W. Bush, Obama, and Trump, I adhere to the tule of many good historians, that a President must be out of office for twenty-five years before they can be “officially” rated. That’s because we need to allow time to determine the real impacts of their administration and policies. (Having said that, I am confident George W. Bush will eventually make the Top Ten worst, and Donald Trump will own First Place for all eternity.)

There are countless such lists of terrible Chief Executives, but it is almost always the same names, with slight differences in the rankings. There are of course outliers, who allow their own personal ideology to overrule historical facts and critical thinking, hence, there are those libertarians and far-rightists who believe Herbert Hoover, a perennial contender for the very worst ever, was actually a great President, because they believe the government should not help anyone under any circumstances, aside from multinational corporations in need of a bailout. Some off-the-wall racists and neo-Confederates would pluck the hapless Andrew Johnson…
