TOO BAD DEMOCRATS COULDN’T CUT A DEAL WITH McCARTHY

The spinless Republican Speaker would have gone from a creature of Gaetz to one controlled by Hakeem Jeffries. That would have been a lot better from America than the current chaos.

I held out hope until the end that the Democrats would be able to cut a deal with McCarthy, where he would end the impeachment inquiry, deliver enough votes to pass Ukraine aid and a budget, and put some of the few rational Republicans in committee chairs instead of lunatics like Jim Jordan and James Comer.

I thought that a craven career politician without any North Star and lacking any principles, would agree in order to squeeze one last year out his neutered Speakership. After all, being beholden to Hakeem Jeffries is a whole lot better than having the Sword of Damocles hanging over one’s head in the form of Matt Gaetz.

I still believe that would have been a better situation than the one we are in now, where a rogue party controlled by maniacs has created a situation where the House of Representatives has no Speaker at a time the clock is once again towards default. Any Speaker chosen by a GOP beholden to Gaetz is not going to give us a Speaker working in the best interests of the American people. Dems would have been able to pressure McCarthy in ways they won’t be able to do with whomever the Republicans offer up as a sacrifice in a meaningless Speaker’s seat.

Until we Dems can take back the House in the November, 2024 elections, our best hope is that Hakeem Jeffries can work with a handful of Republicans who act either out of patriotism or because they are in Blue districts. That means boning up on the rules governing discharge petitions, where a majority can force a vote on anything.

Things will be so much better in December, 2024, when Hakeem Jeffries becomes Speaker!
