WHAT WOULD DEPORTING MILLIONS LOOK LIKE?

The Trump campaign and the GOP sycophants have repeatedly promised this. What will it look like? The only examples we have are the Holocaust and the mass expulsions in Kosovo and Myanmar.

There’s been one loud pledge Trump and Vance have screamed throughout the campaign, augmented with cheerleading from the entire GOP lineup: mass deportations of undocumented immigrants, nearly all non-white people. The day before the election, Trump anti-immigrant spokesperson Stephen Miller vowed to deport millions of undocumented immigrants as soon as possible. (Actually, Miller, like Trump and Vance, promises to deport some immigrants who are here lawfully while seeking asylum.)

During the course of the campaign, I politely asked several Trump supporters exactly what a deportation of millions of people would look like. For example, I asked, how will the people in charge of this roundup find their targets? Trump and Vance suggest turning teachers and health workers into immigration agents, required to report a suspected undocumented immigrant. I ask them if they think perhaps people will avoid both schools and hospitals, leading to people who drive through stop signs because they can’t read them, and people spreading deadly contagious diseases because they fear a visit to the doctor or hospital.

I usually get a puzzled look or a shrug of the shoulders, but never an answer. It’s…
